Bike Trainer Basics
Though there are four general designs of bicycle trainers, two are favored for the best everyday stationary bike trainer experience.
Bicycle Trainers
1) Rollers were the first stationary bicycle trainers. Rollers are a more free-form indoor riding apparatus meant for experienced cyclists. After bike is set on the rollers, the rider must stay balanced. Most rollers offer no frame to stabilize the bicycle in an upright position and no resistance, though there are a few exceptions now. Rollers are preferred by serious racers to practice and refine technical racing form such as a fluid pedling form. With the availability of bike trainers, rollers are no longer the best way to experience intense training workouts.
2) Magnetic trainers or mag trainers are more quiet. One disadvantage is the resistance is not progressive, thus the faster you pedal, the easier it gets, unlike the real world riding experience. Some models allow resistance adjustment while you ride if you have a model with a remote.
At least one magnetic resistance trainer (CycleOps Magneto Trainer) has progressive resistance, important in simulating realism in riding conditions.
Fluid Trainer
3) The fluid bike trainer is relatively quiet, about the same as the magnetic trainer. Fluid trainer has progressive resistance, similating more road-like riding conditions. Resistance will increase as you pedal harder. The fluid trainer is good for a variety of workouts from sprints to intervals to just cruising. To evaluate the feel of an indoor cycling trainer, check the size of the fly wheel, as the heavier the flywheel, the more realistic the ride.
4) Computerized bike trainers are stationary trainers for sophisticated athletes, designed with advanced computer controls and monitoring.

Accessories for your cycling trainer fitness workouts:
Put a mat under your indoor cycling trainer to muffle the noise and catch the prespiration.
Two fans are a good idea. Direct a small fan at the rotating mechanism to keep it cool. The larger fan can be pointed at you.
Use an inexpensive smooth tire for the back tire of your bike. Avoid using racing tires or knobby mountain bike tires with your cycling trainer.
